Michael Anthony de Verteuil (born May 7, 1932 in London , United Kingdom ) is a Trinidadian historian.

Life

De Verteuil was born in London. His parents went back to Trinidad when he was ten months old. As a student, de Verteuil attended St. Mary's College, a Catholic high school in Port of Spain . When he was 20 he planned to study forest science in Wales , but then decided to pursue a spiritual career and completed his novitiate in Quebec . He then studied at University College in Dublin, which he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in English and history. He was ordained a Catholic priest. He served as a missionary in Nigeria for a few months before returning to Trinidad in 1963 to teach at St. Mary's College. From 1966 to 1968 he was assistant director at Fatima College in the St. James neighborhood . From 1968 he taught again at St. Mary's College and was its director from 1978. He retired in 1992, but continues to teach religion in college and attend Trinity TV fairs in his spare time.

Act as a writer

One of the focal points of de Verteuil's work are works on the history of the Franco- Creoles of Trinidad, an ethnic group to which he belongs. Due to his roots in the Franco-Creole community of Trinidad, he can access documents from the property of long-established families for his research, which enables a deep and vivid insight into the life of the families who immigrated to Trinidad since the Cedula de populacion of 1783. Occasionally, de Verteuil's style is criticized for the fact that he occasionally uncritically adopts the Franco-Creole views of the epochs thematized in his books, which can sometimes seem old-fashioned or involuntarily funny to the uninvolved reader, but also ethical in the case of the trivialization of the hunt for Maroons, for example Ideas of the 21st century contradicts. Another focus of de Verteuil's work is the history of other ethnic groups in Trinidad, he published books on the history and influences of the Germans, Indians, Irish, Jews and Corsicans in Trinidad.
