Anti Marguste

Anti Marguste (born August 5, 1931 in the village of Eavere, today the municipality of Are in Pärnu County , Estonia ; † January 12, 2016 ) was an Estonian composer.

Anti Marguste graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute in 1953 . He then studied composition at the State Conservatory in Tallinn (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ) with Mart Saar and Anatoli Garšnek until 1960 . In the same year he joined the Estonian Association of Composers ( Estonian Eesti Heliloojate Liit ).

From 1959 to 1962 Marguste was editor-in-chief of the music section of the newspaper Sirp ja Vasar . From 1962 he worked as a lecturer in music theory at the Tallinn Music High School named after Georg Ots . In 1983 he received the annual music award of the Estonian SSR .

Anti Marguste is one of the most famous Estonian composers of the second half of the 20th century. His compositions are often deliberately based on the Regilaul ( rune song, for example ) of traditional Estonian folk music. He also draws on Estonian folklore when choosing his lyrics. His music spans the broad spectrum from choral singing to symphony .
