Barnacle Point is a cape on the northeast coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua , in the state of Antigua and Barbuda . Today it is largely covered by the facilities of Antigua Airport, VC Bird .

Location and landscape

Barnacle Point extends approximately 8 kilometers east of St. John's in the North Sound , the north-western bay of the Atlantic coast of Antigua protected by islands and reefs . The approximately 1 kilometer long peninsula stretches eastward and separates Winthorbes Bay in the north and Fitches Creek Bay in the south, the bay directly to the south is the estuary of Winthorpes Foot Creek . It also forms the eastern cape of Falmouth Harbor , to which Fitches Creek forms a side bay, the eastern enclosure of which is the Crabbs Peninsula . Opposite Barnacle Point is Maiden Island .

History and buildings

Fort Byam

Falmouth is the oldest port on the island. The English built Fort Byam here early on , a facility that secured the Old North Sound Harbor , as the entire bay of Falmouth was initially called. across from Crabbs there was a position at Old Fort Point . From the late 19th century, the complex fell into disrepair.

Coolidge Airfield

Coolidge Air Force Base was built here during World War II . The Americans needed a base for anti-submarine defense to secure the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, and the relatively shallow North Sound seemed ideal. The runway of the military airfield ran directly over the peninsula onto the bay, and most of the ruins of Fort Byam fell victim to the construction work. Today the runway is only used as a parking space, the new runway of the international airport leads northwest over Winthorbes Bay.

Antigua Air Station (USAF) / Antigua Tracking Station (NASA)

There is also a military radar system on the Cape , the USAF  Antigua Air Station , which also monitors rocket launches from Cape Canaveral , Florida. In the 1990s, space shuttle missions were also followed here ( Antigua Tracking Station of NASA). The facility replaced the Dow Hill Tracking Station (1966–1970). Other space missions were also followed later, such as the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory in 2011. The dismantling of the radar system is planned for 2014.

natural reserve

South of the peninsula. Around Winthorpes Foot Creek, there are still some of the best preserved mangrove swamps on the island, so a Fitches Creek Protected Area (onA) is under discussion here, it should include Winthorpes Foot Creek and Fitches Creek estuary. An Important Bird Area Fitches Creek Bay has been identified by BirdLife International that extends across to the Crabbs Peninsula . The water areas around Barnacle Point are supervised by the North East Marine Management Area  ( NEMMA ).
