The Antilles Eight Schwalbe ( Chordeiles gundlachii ) is a species of the family of Nightjars (Caprimulgidae).
It occurs in the extreme southeast of the USA , on the Bahamas , Cuba , Île des Pins , Cayman Islands , Jamaica , Hispaniola , Puerto Rico , Virgin Islands and on Guadeloupe , also on San Andrés and Providencia .
Their range includes all open or semi-open dry habitats, including recently cleared or built-up areas.

The Antilles nightjar is 20–23 cm tall and weighs about 50 g. There is a gray and a yellow-brown morph . The top and chest are dark with brown, gray and white patterns, the long wings are black with a white band of wings visible in flight, the tips do not reach the tip of the tail. The tail is dark with white tail bands, the underside is white with black stripes. The throat is yellowish brown in the female and white in the male. The Antilles nightjar is very similar to the falcon nightjar . The main distinguishing feature is the pale mirror on the hand wings near the back of the wing when the bird is at rest.
voice
The male's call is described as a repeated, nasal “chitty-chit”, “penk-penk” or as a fast, purring trill consisting of up to 8 tones.
Way of life
The diet consists of moths , beetles and other insects that are hunted in flight high above the forests, up to 30 m above the treetops, and along the coastlines. The Antilles nightjar is crepuscular .
The breeding season is between April and August in Florida and the Bahamas and the Caribbean .
It winters in the south to Colombia .
Hazardous situation
The Antilles nightjar is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
