Antje Leendertse

Antje Leendertse (born March 7, 1963 in Moers ) is a German diplomat who was appointed Political Director at the Federal Foreign Office in April 2018 . From February 22, 2019, Leendertse will be the permanent state secretary under Minister Heiko Maas .

Life

After graduating from high school, Antje Leendertse studied history , Romance studies , economics and philosophy at the University of Cologne , from which she graduated in 1989 with a master's degree.

career

Afterwards she began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service in 1990 and, after graduating, joined the Foreign Office in 1992 . After a position in the Department for Mediterranean Countries in the Political Department of the Foreign Office, she worked at the Embassy in Russia from 1993 to 1997 and then between 1997 and 1999 in the United Nations policy department at the Foreign Office. Subsequently, Antje Leendertse worked in the press department of the Foreign Office between 1999 and 2005, where she was most recently deputy spokeswoman for the Foreign Office from 2002 to 2005. After a subsequent assignment from 2005 to 2006 at the Embassy in the UK and a year of parental leave, she served as Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Finland from 2007 to 2009 . After her return, she was Head of the Western Balkans Division at the Federal Foreign Office from 2009 to 2012 and then from 2012 to March 2014 the Commissioner for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia at the Federal Foreign Office. From March 2014 to March 2015 Antje Leendertse was the Federal Government Commissioner for Disarmament and Arms Control at the Federal Foreign Office. Subsequently, she was Deputy of the Federal Government's Special Representative for the OSCE Chairmanship / Head of the OSCE Chairmanship Task Force in 2016. From February 2017 to April 2018, Leendertse was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations Office and the other international organizations in Geneva .

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas appointed Leendertse as the new Political Director in April 2018. She succeeds Andreas Michaelis , who was promoted to State Secretary. Almost a year later, she was appointed permanent state secretary, succeeding Walter Johannes Lindner , who was appointed ambassador to India , on March 22, 2019 .
