Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville
Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (born July 1, 1680 in Paris , † November 29, 1765 ) was a French scholar, natural historian, author of scientific writings and encyclopedist .
Live and act
His father was the bookseller Antoine Dezallier, his mother Marie Mariette was the widow of the publisher Jean Du Puis. Dezallier studied at the Collège du Plessis , attended some law lectures and learned drawing and engraving from Jean Corneille (1649–1695), Alexandre Le Blond and Bernard Picart . In 1696 the father bought the Argenville estate in the parish of Bezons and handed it over to his son in 1711, who then added the name d'Argenville. In the following years, Dezallier d'Argenville toured Germany, Italy and England. In 1718 he married Françoise-Thérèse Hémart, their son Antoine-Nicolas Dezallier d'Argenville was born in 1723. In 1720, Dezallier d'Argenville sold his property in Bezons and moved to Bièvres . He is said to have created parks at both properties, but these are hardly documented. His wife died in 1742 and he later remarried.
His book La théorie et la pratique du jardinage first appeared anonymously in 1709 and was a widespread and important work on garden art in the 18th century. The second edition was marked with the author's initials, others appeared under the name of the architect Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond (1679–1719), who drew the panels, including the English and German editions. The author revised the editions of 1713 and 1747 according to the rapidly advancing taste of the time and added further, more modern tables. The work was translated into English by John James (approx. 1673–1746) as early as 1712 and translated into German by Franz Anton Danreiter in 1731 under the title Die Gärtnerey, both in terms of theory or consideration as practice or exercise .
From 1748, Dezallier d'Argenville worked for the Encyclopédie Denis Diderots . In a letter he speaks of more than 2000 articles that he wrote for the lexicon. In fact, there are 597 with the abbreviation “K”, which in the Encyclopédie itself is only resolved with “d'Argenville”, so that the proportion of father and son remains unclear.
Dezallier d'Argenville owned a large collection of shells , which he published on, as well as a collection of engravings and drawings.
His son Antoine-Nicolas Dezallier d'Argenville (August 27, 1723 Paris – September 26, 1796 Paris) wrote a Dictionnaire du Jardinage and many garden articles in the Encyclopédie by Denis Diderot and d'Alembert , and in 1787 the two-volume work Vies des Fameux Architectes depuis la Renaissance des Arts .
