Antoine Banassat

Antoine Banassat (born May 20, 1729 in Guéret , † August 18, 1794 in Rochefort ) was a French clergyman, member of parliament and martyr . He was beatified in 1995.

Life

Banassat was a priest of the Diocese of Limoges and pastor of the parish of Saint-Fiel in the Creuse department . Elected on March 21, 1789 for the Sénéchaussée Guéret as a member of the clergy in the General Estates of 1789 , he belonged to this or the resulting National Assembly until September 30, 1791, but hardly made a difference.

After returning from Paris to his home department Creuse, he was arrested after denouncing during the reign of terror and deported to Rochefort. There he died as a result of poor treatment on board the prison ship Deux-Associés and was buried in a mass grave on the Île Madame .

Pope John Paul II beatified him on October 1, 1995 with the Rochefort Martyrs Group . A street in Saint-Fiel is named after him. His feast day is August 18th.
