Antoine Bertin
Antoine Bertin , called Chevalier Bertin (born October 10, 1752 on the Île Bourbon , † June 30, 1790 in Santo Domingo ) was a French poet whose works were mainly erotic themes.
Life
Antoine Bertin, son of François-Jacques Bertin , was brought to France in 1761 at the age of nine and raised in Paris . He studied at the Collège du Plessis , entered the military career and, as a protégé of Queen Marie Antoinette and the Count of Artois, made it to the degree of captain of the cavalry and the Chevalier de Saint-Louis . But he was also busy with poetry and literature. Like his friend and compatriot Évariste de Parny , he followed in Chaulieu's footsteps as a poet . He made his debut in 1773 with his Poésies and later wrote a Voyage de Bourgogne (Paris 1777), partly in prose and partly in verse, in the taste of Chapelles and Bachaumont , in which travelogues and songs alternate. His anacreontic poems and elegies, which he wrote for the Almanach des muses since 1772 , came out under the title Les Amours (London 1780).
One of the most sensual erotic poets in France, Bertin was influenced by the Latin elegists, but was under the spell of classicism in his elegant verses. He became a favorite of his age and was nicknamed "French Properz "; but he lacks the variety, liveliness, and lyrical swing of the Roman poet.
At the end of 1789 Bertin went to Santo Domingo to marry a young Creole , Hélène de Lestang, whom he had met in Paris. But he arrived at his destination exhausted, so that he had to postpone the marriage. When this finally took place in June 1790, he was seized with a violent fever on his wedding day, on which he died 17 days later at the age of only 37.
Bertin's works first appeared in two volumes in Paris in 1785. Jean-François Boissonade reissued them as Œuvres complètes (1824). Eugène Asse got another edition under the title Poésies et œuvres diverses (1879).
