Jean-François Boissonade

Jean-François Boissonade de Fontarabie (born August 12, 1774 in Paris , † September 8, 1857 in Passy ) was a French classical philologist .

Live and act

Jean-François Boissonade's family came from Gascony . After studying at the Collège d'Harcourt in Paris, he entered the civil service in 1792. After his dismissal in 1795, he was reinstated by Lucien Bonaparte in 1799 and appointed secretary in the prefecture of the Haute-Marne department.

In addition to his job, Boissonade dealt with Greek literature. In order to be able to concentrate fully on his studies, he finally resigned from civil service. In addition to his research work, he took up academic teaching at the University of Paris in 1809 , where he was appointed professor of Greek language and literature in 1813. In 1828 he switched to the chair of Greek language at the Collège de France . He was also head of the Bibliothèque du Roi and permanent secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions . Since 1848 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

On July 22, 1856, Boissonade married Marie-Rose Boutry in Paris and had a son with her, who later became the legal scholar Gustave Boissonade .

On September 8, 1857, Jean François Boissonade de Fonarabie died in Passy and found his final resting place on the Cimetière de Montmartre (Division 16).

Boissonade was one of the most prolific editors of Greek literature. His text editions made many remote authors available for research, but did not permanently meet the demands of scientific text criticism . Nevertheless, his life's work is an important achievement in French philology of the 19th century. He edited many texts for the first time .
