Antoine Caron (* around 1521 in Beauvais , † 1599 in Paris ) was a French painter of Mannerism and a master of the school of Fontainebleau .

Life

He is one of the few French painters of his time with a strong artistic personality. His work reflects the refined but unstable atmosphere at the Valois court during the wars of religion (1560–98). He worked under Primaticcio and Nicolò dell'Abbate between 1540 and 1550 at Fontainebleau Castle . In 1561 he was appointed court painter to Catherine de Medici and Henry II of France. As a court painter, he also had the task of organizing court celebrations. He was involved in furnishing the festivities for the entry of Charles IX. in Paris and the wedding of Henry IV with Margaret of Valois.

Stylistic devices

His few surviving works include historical and allegorical subjects, subjects from court ceremonies, scenes from magic, alchemy and astrology, as well as battle paintings. An example here is his Bloodbath of the Triumvirs of (1566), which can be seen in the Louvre , his only signed work. Caron had a fondness for gorgeous colors and bizarre architectural forms. His pictures are laid out like theater scenes in which groups rich in figures move in a spacious setting. What is striking is the elongation of the figures, who act with graceful and capricious gestures and are often in a graceful and fragile balanced state of suspension. The attribution of his works is often controversial in science. He shares this uncertainty of attribution with a number of French painters of the second school of Fontainebleau , whose masters are often referred to only by emergency names.
