Antoine Charles Horace Vernet , occasionally Carle Vernet , (born August 14, 1758 in Bordeaux , † November 17, 1836 in Paris ) was a French painter , draftsman and lithographer .

biography

Vernet was the son of the painter Claude Joseph Vernet and father of Horace Vernet . He received artistic lessons from his father and Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié . In 1782 he was awarded the prestigious Prix ​​de Rome . He used motifs from his short stay in Italy (1782/83) throughout his career.

At the age of 30 he was accepted as a member of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1788 ; 1810 at the Académie des Beaux-Arts .

The main themes dealt with by Carle Vernet include battles from the Napoleonic era. In recognition of his battle depictions, he was accepted into the Legion of Honor by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 . Carle Vernet also painted portraits and hunting scenes; He had a special talent as an animal painter for the representation of horses and dogs. He provided the template for the panoramic wallpaper Les Chasses de Compiègne (The Hunts of Compiègne ) by the Parisian manufacturer Jacquemart & Bénard.
