Life

Little is known about Antoine Dard's early years and his education. He married in Dijon in 1734 and lived in Grenoble from 1754 . From 1760 he was one of those musicians who were known as the ordinaire du Roy and received a job in the royal chapel of Louis XV. and in the orchestra of the Académie royale de musique, the forerunner of the Paris Opera , where he worked until 1778. It was not until 1763 that he was given the position of grand hautbois de la Chambre et Écurie du Roy for a period of six years . In 1773 he received a royal privilege to publish the works he composed himself.

Only a few of the vocal compositions by Dard have survived; some of them are listed in the catalogs of his two publishers, Mme. Berault and Mlle. Girard. The ariettes and barcaroles that have been preserved consistently deal with love topics in all nuances with a very intimate expression. These works are mostly composed for voice and 2 violins and Bc . The Sonatasammlung op. 1 for violin or flute and bc is virtuoso, but does not make any difficult technical demands, unlike his demanding sonatas op. 2 composed for bassoon or cello , the Dards patron M. Duvauchel, a high royal official of the forest and Were dedicated to water management. With the exception of one sonata, they are made up of four movements, all sonatas are melodious and heavily decorated, the Italian influence is unmistakable. In the foreword, Dard expressly mentions that these works are primarily of a didactic nature ( l'envie d'instruire ) (accessed May 30, 2020).
