Anton Absenger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anton Absenger (born June 18, 1820 in Zerlach , † December 17, 1899 in Graz ) was an Austrian composer of popular songs.

Life

Anton Absenger grew up in a large farming family in Eastern Styria. He received lessons on the violin and the flugelhorn from an early age. At the age of twenty-three he played as a flugelhorn player in the Johann Gungl band . With this he made an extensive concert tour. From Graz he came to Cologne via Munich, Nuremberg and Frankfurt am Main. From there it went via Berlin, Danzig, Koenigsberg and Riga to St. Petersburg. From there it went back via Hamburg, Dresden, Prague and Vienna. He gained a lot of experience on this trip. In Graz he led the string group of the Citizens Corps and the National Guard. He studied harmony and counterpoint with August Svoboda (1795–1863).

In 1852 he went to Leoben as the last tower keeper . The office of town music director was connected with this office. He was also responsible for serving as the rain choir at the three churches there such as St. Xavier. He founded a music school from which a boys' band emerged. He also directed the male choir in Leoben and worked as a music teacher at the grammar school. In 1855 he successfully performed with her in Graz. With J.Lorenz and K. Kraushofer he founded a folk music play group. Extensive concert tours with this group took him to Munich, Mannheim and Paris. In 1865 they played in front of Emperor Franz Joseph I in Schönbrunn Palace . On this occasion he received the K. and k. gold medal for art and science . After J. Lorenz died, the group broke up. Absenger went on concert tours with his children. Although this spread the Styrian music in Europe, he neglected his actual offices in Leoben. In 1883 he was released without a pension. He only received a clearance of 300 guilders. Absenger was the last to combine the offices of City Music Director and Regens Chori in Leoben. He was also the last tower keeper. Absenger was now a freelance artist and later became more and more dependent on the support and donations of his friends and admirers.

He is buried in the St. Leonhard cemetery in Graz. Absengerstrasse in Graz is named after him.

Works (selection)

In addition to numerous songs and marches, Anton Absenger also composed church music. These include six settings of Tantum ergo and other choirs. Numerous works for wind orchestra have come down to us in his estate. He composed works for brass and salon bands, often with the flugelhorn as a solo instrument. He also composed dances for piano and popular songs. His compositions have often entered the oral tradition and have become folk songs, like 's Kohlröserl.
