Anton Asmussen
Anton Asmussen (born March 23, 1857 in Flensburg , † November 12, 1904 in Hamburg ) was a German painter.
Life
Asmussen had been a student at the trade school in Hamburg since 1874 , where he learned decorative painting. Contributions from the Patriotic Society and the Averhoff Foundation enabled him to attend the Art Academy in Munich in 1884 . In the same year he moved to the Karlsruhe Art Academy , where he was a student of Hermann Baisch and Gustav Schönleber until 1886 . It was probably Schönleber who motivated him to go on a study trip to Tyrol and Italy. After he had settled in Rothenburg ob der Tauber for some time, he settled in the Lange Reihe 112 in Hamburg, where he was married to the pianist Martha Möller.
Asmussen initially painted mainly architectural images from southern Germany and from 1898 to 1902 regularly participated in the exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace and from 1901 to 1908 in exhibitions in Hamburg. From 1890 he turned to the north German landscape and painted regularly on the Schlei in the summer months. His winter pictures in pastel found particular recognition. A painted palette by 14 artists, including Louis Douzette , Richard Hünten, Carl Becker , Reinhard Paul Junghans, Jacob Nöbbe , Eduard von Gebhardt and Karl Plückebaum also contains an evening winter landscape by Asmussen (Vineta Museum Barth).
Asmussen, who was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association , had only moderate success, so that he was forced to also carry out decoration work, sometimes on a huge scale. But even this activity did not bring any secure income. After the artist's suicide, the banker and art lover Friedrich Bendixen , the art collector Henry Simms and the merchant Ernst Rump raised violent accusations against the Hamburg bourgeoisie, who, in their opinion, were too little committed to young cultural workers.
