Anton Doll (born March 3, 1826 in Munich ; † May 2, 1887 ibid) was a German landscape painter and representative of the Munich School . In addition to city views of his hometown, his best-known works include primarily depictions of village life in the Munich area and, above all, the winter motifs. His works are exhibited in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the graphic collection of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart .

Life

Doll was born on March 3, 1826 as the son of a teacher in Munich. Already in his childhood and youth in the Hackenstrasse 8 in Munich, his pronounced talent for drawing was shown, which was encouraged by his teacher Franz Dahmen (1793-1865), a portrait painter and lithographer . He finished his law studies at the University of Munich prematurely in order to devote himself completely to painting. In 1852, at the age of 26, he became a member of the Münchner Kunstverein , which exhibited Doll's works at an early age. Even after his death in 1887, the association dedicated an exhibition to the deceased.

In the early works of Anton Doll there are mainly watercolors and vedute with Munich motifs. Because of their faithful representations, these are still of documentary value today. As a result, Doll further developed the genre of landscape painting with rural motifs, following the tradition of painters such as Peter von Hess , Carl August Lebschée , Michael Neher , Heinrich Bürkel and Moritz Eduard Lotze . Doll found his motifs on excursions to the Munich foothills, Switzerland and Northern Italy. Landscapes depicting the village population at work and enjoying their leisure time are particularly characteristic. Popular and frequently recurring motifs are primarily late romantic winter village and lake landscapes.
