Anton Friedrich König (painter)

Anton Friedrich König (born April 15, 1722 in Berlin ; † October 10, 1787 ibid) was a German miniature painter who had worked as a royal court miniature portrait painter for Frederick the Great since 1767 .

Anton Friedrich König was the son of the draftsman and engraver Anton Balthasar König (1693–1773). He attended the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts and Mechanical Sciences in Berlin. At first he worked in the scientific mathematical field and made maps and plans. He was a student of C. L. Blessendorf and Antoine Pesne . After he switched his activity to miniature painting, he was very productive and portrayed many nobles, he is said to have painted over a thousand miniature portraits of Friedrich II alone, many of which he also signed. Some of the unsigned miniature portraits ascribed to him could also be of Judah Pinhas , with whom he worked temporarily. König married Anna Dorothea Schröder, who worked as a draftsman and painter, and one son was the medalist Anton Friedrich König (1756–1838).

Since 1774 he was an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts and inspector of the royal sculptures in Berlin.
