biography

1866 to 1914

Anton Goldbach joined the Tyrolean Jägerregiment as a simple hunter on September 30, 1883 at the age of seventeen. In 1886 he was retired as a lieutenant in Feldjägerbataillon 1, later transferred to the General Staff and served in various General Staff assignments. In 1910 he became a colonel and commander of infantry regiment No. 31. Between May 1911 and April 1914 he was chief of staff of the kuk XII. Corps.

First World War

On August 1, 1914 promoted to major general, Goldbach was also appointed commander of the 32nd Infantry Brigade. With this brigade he fought in the association of the 16th Infantry Troop Division (ITD) as part of the Kövess army group during the battle in Galicia on the Gnila Lipa .

In September 1914 he took over the leadership of the 16th division at short notice, which he had to hand over to Major General Schariczer after the defeat at the Wereszyca .

From June to September 1915 Goldbach was the leader of the Gendarmerie Troop Division. In September 1915 he became commander of the 70th Honved Division, which covered the Transylvanian border as part of the kuk Korps Szurmay .

In August 1916 he took over the 71st Honved Division in the new Romanian theater of war . With this unit he defended the city of Schäßburg after the Romanian attack and took part in the counter-offensive of the German 9th Army . For his achievements during the fighting in Transylvania he was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order after the end of the war .

As kuk field marshal lieutenant and commander of the 71st Infantry Division, Goldbach was elevated to the Austrian nobility as " Noble von Sulittaborn" by the highest resolution of Emperor Charles I in Laxenburg Palace on June 19, 1917 ; the corresponding diploma was issued on August 1, 1917 in Vienna. Like other Austro-Hungarian officers, Goldbach seems to have made use of the officers' privilege for more than 30 years of military service .

In November 1917 Goldbach took over the 53rd Honved Division on the new Piavefront in Italy, in June 1918 this division stood as a reserve of the 11th Army in the section of the plateau of the seven communities . At the end of the war, from October 1918, he still led a corps group to protect the Transylvanian border.

1918 to 1924

On January 1, 1919, Goldbach was retired and lived in Zahradky near Česká Lípa until his death on August 28, 1924 . When he received his 189th doctorate for the Military Maria Theresa Order on June 27, 1922, the Order Chapter awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Military Maria Theresa Order "for his achievements during the fighting in Transylvania in September and October 1916".
