Lautz was the son of the town clerk in Worms Johann Christoph Lautz (1706–1776) and his wife Henrica (Henriette) Dorothea nee Graf (1717–1797). Lautz, who was a Protestant denomination, married Ernestina Catharina nee Nöll, the daughter of a consistorial councilor and inspector in Wiesbaden. The marriage resulted in two sons (Ferdinand Christoph (1778-1802) and Karl Wilhelm August (1781-1804)), both of whom died young. The eldest daughter Marie Dorothea Christine (1781–1838) married Karl Wilhelm Becker, the second daughter Friederike Wilhelmine (1786–1809) married government director Lange.

Lautz became Princely Nassau-Usingen Government Secretary in Wiesbaden. In 1783 he was appointed bailiff in the Usingen office. In 1803 he became a councilor in Wiesbaden in 1803, where he was promoted to the ducal Nassau secret council on June 5, 1806 . From 1809 he was a directing councilor at the Lehenhof in Wiesbaden before he retired on January 11, 1819. After a few years he moved to Mosbach to live with his son-in-law Becker. He was the administrator of the Weißesche and Lautz family scholarships and created a complete family tree of the Lautz family.
