Stermsek developed football in the youth department of Schwarz-Weiß Essen. From the game year 1932/33 the half-forward belonged to the ETB league team. In the early years of the Gauliga Niederrhein, the team from the Grugastadion did not get beyond midfield. In the third season of coach Theodor Lohrmann , 1937/38, the men around Paul Winkler, Günther Stephan and Willi Multhaup reached the runner-up behind Fortuna Düsseldorf for the first time. In the following round in 1938/39, under Lohrmann's successor Josef Uridil , the new goalkeeper Fritz Buchloh and the new striker hope Heinrich Trimhold, second place was again achieved with two points behind. The third runner-up came in 1939/40. When the black and white landed in third place in 1940/41, they were overtaken by the two Essen local rivals TuS Helene Altenessen and Rot-Weiss. During this period of success, Stermsek was always part of the regular ETB line-up.

In the Tschammerpokal 1940 , he had prevailed with Schwarz-Weiß Essen over Germania 1896 Mudersbach (8: 1), Barmbecker SG (10: 3) and SG Eschweiler (5: 2) before he won the quarter-finals on October 20, 1940 with 1 : 2 goals at the later finalists 1. FC Nürnberg lost. At the "Club" he had brought the ETB 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. In the list of goalscorers for the final round of the cup, Stermsek is listed in third place with seven goals together with Edmund Conen . Any further hits in the first final round of the 8: 1 win against Mudersbach are not taken into account, as the scorers of this game are not known.

After the end of the Second World War he was immediately active again for his home club and in the game year 1948/49 occupied fifth place with ETB in the Landesliga Niederrhein, Group 2, and thus the Uhlenkrug-Elf was in 1949/50 for the two-tier 2nd League West qualified.

At the age of 38, the long-time ex-Gauliga player joined local rivals Rot-Weiss in the first-class Oberliga West for the 1949/50 season. With the newly introduced contract football system - a maximum of DM 320 per month was allowed and professional activity was a prerequisite for playing eligibility - the players were able to earn a decent extra income to support themselves. Under coach Karl Hohmann and at the side of striker Hans Kleina (20 goals), the veteran made 27 league appearances in his first league year and finished third with his team. Since four teams from the West were allowed in the 1950 finals, Stermsek and his club took on 1. FC Kaiserslautern in May. The game ended on May 21 in Karlsruhe 2-2 draw after extra time. The oldie had acted on the side of center runner Heinz Wewers as left wing runner and in the attack the team from Essener Hafenstrasse with August Gottschalk , Clemens Wientjes , Fritz Abromeit , Werner Cornelissen and Bernhard Termath took part . The replay took place on May 29th in Cologne in front of 45,000 spectators; after a 2-0 half-time lead, the Walter-Elf from Betzenberg prevailed in the renewed extension with 3-2 goals. In his second league round in 1950/51, the senior also belonged to the RWE core line-up with 28 appearances and three goals. The Red and White took sixth place in the west.

When Helmut Rahn , another dangerous striker , came to RWE for the 1951/52 season alongside August Gottschalk and Bernhard Termath , Stermsek even celebrated winning the championship in the Oberliga West with his teammates in his old days. He was still used in five league games. As the right wing runner, he was used again in the final round in the two games against VfB Stuttgart (3: 5, 3: 2). In the 3-2 home win against the eventual German champions from Stuttgart on June 2, he formed the defense of the Essenes together with goalkeeper Heinrich Kwiatkowski , defenders Werner Göbel and Willi Köchling in the runner row with Clemens Wientjes and Heinz Wewers .

The last assignment for Red-White in the Oberliga West was on November 30, 1952, when the 41-year-old had to experience a 0-1 defeat with RWE at STV Horst-Emscher. After his playing career, he was a coach at SG Wattenscheid 09.

Selection appointments

The attacker first played a competitive game in the Reichsbund Cup in the selection from the Lower Rhine on October 13, 1935. In the 2-1 win in Frankfurt am Main against the host southwest, he ran on half right on the side of striker colleagues Paul Winkler, Karl Hohmann, Josef Rasselnberg and Stanislaus Kobierski . He celebrated his greatest success with the Niederrhein selection in 1937 with the 2-1 victory in the Reichsbund Cup final against Saxony, which played with players such as Willibald Kress , Walter Kreisch , Walter Rose , Erwin Helmchen , Willi Munkelt and Willi Kund . Stermsek scored both goals for the Lower Rhine. The last time he appeared for his regional association was on October 6, 1940 in a 3: 4 defeat in Stuttgart against Württemberg. On the half-left he scored a hit.
