Anton Stroz OSB (also Strotz or Strolz ; * December 6, 1656 in Graz ; † November 28, 1724 in St. Lambrecht ) was an Austrian priest of the Benedictine order, professor of philosophy at the Benedictine University of Salzburg and abbot of the St. Lambrecht Monastery in Styria .

Life

Anton Stroz was born in Graz as the son of Elias and Maria Stroz. At the age of 20 he entered the Benedictine monastery of St. Lambrecht. Stroz studied theology and philosophy in Padua and Rome and was ordained a priest . After his return from Italy he became head of the college and novice training in St. Lambrecht. He subsequently taught philosophy at the Schottenkloster Vienna and in 1694 became professor of philosophy at the University of Salzburg, where he was dean of the philosophical faculty from 1695 to 1696.

In 1707 he was elected abbot of the St. Lambrecht Monastery in Styria, which was in debt with half a million talers. With his knowledge of economics he managed to avert the bankruptcy of the abbey , to convert the monastery economy into a solid business and to convert the debts into assets. By careful management, Abbot Anton enabled his successor Kilian Werlein to work as a great patron of the arts and builder. a. the construction of the baroque guest wing called the New Prelature and the production of the grace altar in silver of the basilica of Mariazell .

Stroz died on November 22nd, 1724, "too early for the welfare of the pen, but ripe for eternity".
