Anton von Steinbüchel

Anton von Steinbüchel (full name Anton Steinbüchel von Rheinwall ; * December 4, 1790 in Krems an der Donau , † December 28, 1883 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian numismatist and archaeologist .

Anton von Steinbüchel, son of the military doctor in the Austrian service Jakob Anton Steinbüchel, who came from a Cologne family and was ennobled in 1823, studied at the University of Vienna from 1807 , where he received his doctorate in 1811. phil. received his doctorate. From 1809 he worked at the kk Münz- und Antiquitätenkabinett , first as an intern, from 1811 as 2nd curator, since 1816 as 1st curator and since 1819, succeeding Franz Neumann, as director. In 1840 he was given early retirement. In addition, he taught from 1817 to 1834 as a professor of coin and antiquity at the University of Vienna. After his retirement he worked temporarily as an art dealer.

Steinbüchel rearranged and inventoried the holdings of the coin and antiquities cabinet during his tenure. He also succeeded in considerably expanding the collections through purchases and finds from excavations (e.g. from Carnuntum ).
