Antoni Canals
Antoni Canals (* 1352 in the Kingdom of Valencia , † 1419 ) was a Dominican , orator and writer. He was known for his sermons (none of which have survived today) and for three translations or adaptations of classical works into Catalan .
Antoni Canals was a student of Vincent Ferrer until 1398 and a theology teacher in Valencia. Then he went to Barcelona , where the royal court had called him, and stayed there from 1398 to 1401. On his return to Valencia , he served from 1401 to 1419 as first lieutenant to the inquisitor of the kingdom.
Works
The main purpose of his works is the apostolate . Antoni Canals' humanistic attitude is expressed in his three works:
- Translation into Catalan of De providentia by Seneca .
- Translation into Catalan of Dictorum factorumque memorabilium by Valerius Maximus . He called it Llibre anomenat Valeri Màxim (called Book of Valerius Maximus ).
- Another humanistic work is the Raonament fet entre Scipió e Aníbal (Dialogue between Scipio and Hannibal ). This is a free translation of the seventh volume by Francesco Petrarcas Africa with extensions based on the work of other authors.
