Antonio Borja Won Pat
Antonio Borja Won Pat (born December 10, 1908 in Sumay , Guam , † May 1, 1987 in Silver Spring , Maryland ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and first delegate of the "organized non-incorporated territory of Guam " in the House of Representatives of the United States States .
Life
Won Pat worked as a teacher from 1926. From 1934 to 1939 he was the school director in Piti , Inarajan and Sumay. From 1940 until the end of World War II he taught at George Washington High School in Agana .
His political career began in 1936 when he was elected to the Advisory Guam Congress . He later belonged to the Guam Assembly and the Guam Legislature that resulted from it. In the latter he acted as speaker in the 1st, 2nd, 4th to 7th legislative periods . A position that Won Pat had already held in the Guam Assembly . In 1965 he became the first Representative of Guam in Washington, DC. 1968 he was re-elected to this office. In 1972 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . That same year, Won Pat was elected a Democrat to the 93rd Congress , becoming the first Guam delegate to the United States House of Representatives. The House of Representatives belonged to five successful re-elections from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1985. After leaving the House of Representatives, he lived in Sinajana , Guam, until his death .
He died of myocardial infarction on May 1, 1987 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland and was buried in Veterans Cemetery in Piti, Guam. Won Pat was married with eight children. His daughter Judith T. Won Pat is also politically active. The international airport Antonio B. Won Pat in Hagåtña is named after him.
