Tomb of General Antonio Cantore

Antonio Cantore (* 1860 in Sampierdarena near Genoa ; † July 20, 1915 near Cortina d'Ampezzo ) was an Italian major general .

Cantore served as an officer in the Alpini . During the First World War , he commanded units as general in Trentino and the Dolomites . He was shot dead by an Austrian sniper on the evening of July 20, 1915 on the Tofanen during the first Dolomite offensive while inspecting the front lines. After Cantore's death, a hero cult developed around him. In later debates the suspicion was repeatedly raised that an Italian officer had killed him because of his authoritarian nature.

A destroyer of the Italian Navy, launched in 1921, has been named General Antonio Cantore .
