Antonio Cariglia

Antonio Cariglia (born March 28, 1924 in Vieste , Apulia , † February 20, 2010 in Pistoia ) was an Italian politician .

biography

Cariglia was elected member of the European Parliament for the first time in the 1979 European elections as a representative of the Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano (PSDI) . After being re-elected in the 1984 and 1989 European elections , he was a member of the European Parliament until 1994. During his membership in the European Parliament, he was also a member of delegations for negotiations with Latin America .

He was also a member of the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica ). In March 1988 he succeeded Franco Nicolazzi as National Secretary and thus party chairman of the PSDI . In 1992 he had to resign from this office after allegations of accepting advantages, bribery and enrichment against the PSDI and against himself. These allegations ultimately contributed to the dissolution of the PSDI in 1998. It was not until twelve years later that he was acquitted of all allegations in 2004 .

After the re-establishment of the PSDI, he was elected honorary president in 2004.
