Antonio Gardano, also called Antonio Gardane (* 1509 ; † October 28, 1569 in Venice ) was a Venetian composer and one of the most important music publishers in Italy of the 16th century.

life and work

Gardano was a Frenchman whose compositions had been printed in Lyon by Jacques Moderne before his arrival in Venice in 1532 .

Gardano founded a music publisher and a printing company in Venice, in which he introduced the sheet music printing technique developed by the French typographer Pierre Haultin (1510–1587). He was married to a woman from the Venetian printer dynasty of the Bindoni. Between 1538 and 1569 he brought out around 450 publications, mainly madrigals and sacred music. Of the 388 remaining prints, only two are non-musical.

successor

After his death in 1569, when his company was the most important Italian music publisher alongside the publishing house of Girolamo Scotto , his sons Alessandro and Angelo Gardano initially continued the company. In 1575 Alessandro left the company. The business was run by Angelo and his siblings Matteo and Lucieta and was later taken over by Gardano's son-in-law Francesco Manellli (1538–1569).

The Gardano publishing house has published well over 1000 volumes of music, including compositions by many important composers of their time, a. a. von Arcadelt , Asola den Gabrieli , Gesualdo , Orlando di Lasso , Marenzio , Philippe de Monte , Palestrina , early works by Heinrich Schütz , works by Vecchi , Victoria , Giaches de Wert and Adrian Willaert .
