Antonio J. Lucero

Antonio J. Lucero (born October 6, 1863 in Las Vegas , New Mexico Territory , † June 6, 1921 in Las Vegas, New Mexico ) was an American university professor, newspaper editor and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Antonio J. Lucero was born 35  miles southeast of Las Vegas, San Miguel County, near the Pecos River during the Civil War . His family later moved to Las Vegas where he went to school. Nothing more is known about his youth. From 1884 to 1888 he worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. He later became the editor of the Spanish language publication called La Voz del Pueblo. He then worked as a professor of Spanish at East Las Vegas High School and New Mexico Normal University (now New Mexico Highlands University ).

Lucero married Julianita Romero in 1893. The couple had seven children: Aurora R., Antonio junior, Delia M., Julia, Edmundo N., Elenor and Arturo Francis Paul. His daughter Aurora was a well-known writer.

In 1903 he was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives. Lucero served as the first Secretary of State for the State of New Mexico from 1912 to 1918 .

After the end of his tenure as Secretary of State, he returned to his hometown of Las Vegas. In the following years he taught again. Lucero became president of La Voz del Pueblo. He was also the first director of prohibition enforcement in New Mexico. In 1920 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Congress .
