Antonio Dionisio Lussich Griffo (born June 23, 1848 in Montevideo ; † June 5, 1928 there ) was a Uruguayan shipowner , botanist and man of letters .

Antonio Lussich was born in Montevideo as the son of Felipe Lussich . Lussich, who spoke five languages ​​fluently, attended the Colegio Alemán until he was 14 . In this context, Lussich himself was awarded a gold medal for his services by the English consul.

Lussich also excelled as a poet. For example, he wrote the poems Los Tres Gauchos Orientales , which he wrote in Buenos Aires in June 1872 , and El Matrero Luciano Santos , which he wrote a year later .

On October 5, 1896, Antonio Lussich acquired 1,500 hectares of land about one hundred kilometers east of Montevideo in Punta Ballena near the coast of the Río de la Plata. Here he built his life's work with the Lussich Arboretum , a botanical garden of extraordinary size and diversity. After his death, he was also buried here at his own request.

Lussich Cove , a bay on King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica, is named after him .
