Lussich Arboretum

The Arboretum Lussich is a 192 hectare arboretum in the Maldonado Department in Uruguay on the east side of the Laguna del Sauce .

The Arboretum Lussich is located in the Sierra de la Ballena in the north of Punta Ballena at a distance of 128 km from the state capital Montevideo and 15 km northwest of Punta del Este on the Ruta Interbalnearia and the Ruta 12 as well as the national road 38. The foundation goes on the year 1895, when Antonio Lussich bought 1,800 hectares in the area and started afforestation. He bought seeds, plants and trees around the world and planted them around his house.

At the end of 1979, 182 hectares were donated to the Maldonado Department and the park was opened to the public. The Lussich Arboretum is one of the most important facilities of its kind.

Duration

The Lussich Arboretum contains 400 exotic species and around 70 endemic to Uruguay.
