Antonio Maria Montanari (born November 29, 1676 in Modena , † April 2, 1737 in Rome ) was an Italian violinist and Baroque composer .

Life

There is no evidence of Montanari's early training. His stay in Rome is only documented between 1692 and the year of his death in 1737, where he initially studied with Arcangelo Corelli . Montanari had jobs in the orchestra of Cardinal Ottoboni and from 1712 a permanent job in his house. Before that he worked for various other Roman noble families; between 1695 and 1708 he was in the service of Cardinal Giovanni Paolo Colonna . In the meantime, Montanari worked for Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili and the Accademia del Disegno di S. Luca. Montanari was one of the performing musicians who performed Handel's La Resurrezione in the Palazzo Ruspoli in 1708 .

Antonio Montanari must have had a high reputation as a violinist; his name can always be found at the beginning of the musician's lists. In writings he is described as the "virtuosissimo suonatore di violino". Johann Georg Pisendel , who had previously taken lessons from Giuseppe Torelli and Antonio Vivaldi , was instructed by Montanari in 1717. Giuseppe Valentini dedicated his trio sonatas Op. 5 and Sonatas Op. 8 one work each under the title La Montanari , and he also dedicated a sonnet to it .

According to contemporary sources, Montanari experimented with enharmonic micro-intervals. His high reputation as a violinist is evident from the fact that he is considered the teacher of many talented violinists in Rome, especially after Corelli's death.
