Giuseppe Valentini (born December 14, 1681 near Florence , † November 1753 in Rome ) was an Italian composer and violinist .

Life

Giuseppe Valentini was a student of Giovanni Battista Bononcini when he worked in Rome between 1690 and 1696. Valentini had important musical functions in many churches. Based on the stories of the aging Francesco Geminiani , Charles Burney mentioned him as a bitter rival of Arcangelo Corelli .

At the age of 11, Valentini became a member of the Congregazione di S. Cecilia , of which he was secretary from 1695. He was first mentioned as a violinist in 1694 when he was in the service of Cardinal Colonna. He was influenced by Corelli at the concerts of the Academia del disegno di San Luca and at the court of the music-loving Cardinal Ottoboni . From 1710 to 1727 Valentini worked as " Suonator di Violino, e Compositore di Musica " with Prince Michelangelo I. Caetani (1685–1759), where from 1714 Pietro Antonio Locatelli was also employed as a violinist. He was also Coadiutore del Maestro di Cappella to S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli.

From 1718 Valentini worked for 30 years as a violinist and composer at the Collegio Nazareno , at the same time he was at Santa Maria Maggiore , where from 1736 he was also conductor in the Cappella Borghese . As the successor to Giuseppe Zipoli , he was Kapellmeister at S. Maria Maddalena from 1720 to 1753 .

The compositions of the partly freelance musician quickly found Europe-wide distribution. Several collections of works have been printed, and numerous manuscripts can be found in the libraries of Manchester, Dresden and Rome. Since the last decades of the 20th century his works have been rediscovered and performed after Valentini was almost completely forgotten. They are characterized by some innovations, so he tries to fascinate his listeners with originality and surprising musical thoughts. As a virtuoso, Valentini has an important place in the history of violin playing.

In addition to his musical activities, the all-rounder Valentini also worked as a painter and poet.

Valentini's works were widespread early on, not least because all of the works were published by Estienne Roger and his successor Le Cène in Amsterdam; corrected reprints of the works Opp. 1 to 4 were published as early as 1710. Pirated prints of some collections were published in Paris and London. The English composer Henry Eccles (junior) (around 1680 - around 1740) sold 18 movements from Valentini's Op. In 1720 in his premier livre de sonates a violon . 8 as his own compositions.
