Benedetto Cardinal Pamphilj

Benedetto Pamphilj (the unusual spelling with "j" is an old orthographic variant for "i" at the end of the word; also written Pamphilij or Pamphili ), (* April 25, 1653 in Rome ; † March 22, 1730 ) was an Italian cardinal, librettist and composer.

family

Benedetto Pamphilj came from the noble family Pamphilj from Umbria . His father, a nephew of Pope Innocent X (Giovanni Battista Pamphilj), was the former Cardinal Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilj , who in 1647 became his cardinalate for the wedding to Olimpia Aldobrandini , Princess of Rossano and widow of the late Paolo Borghese (1622–1642) , gave up and had to leave Rome at the urging of his mother Olimpia Maidalchini .

Life

Pope Innocent XI. appointed him 1678 Grand Prior of Rome of the Sovereign Order of Malta ; he was a member of this order. He was appointed cardinal deacon with the titular church of Santa Maria in Campitelli on September 1, 1681 and ordained a priest on December 24, 1684. This was followed by the titular churches Sant'Agata dei Goti (1685/89), San Cesareo in Palatio , Santa Maria in Cosmedin (1686/88), Sant'Agata alla Suburra (another name for Sant'Agata dei Goti ; 1688/1693) and Santa Maria in Via Lata (1693/1730). He was Archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore (1694/1699) and the Lateran Basilica (1699/1730). He also worked for the Vatican Secret Archives (1704/1730) and the Vatican Apostolic Library (1704/1730).

In 1685 he was appointed Prefect of the Apostolic Signature . From 1693 to 1730 he was a cardinal protodeacon . Benedetto Pamphilj took part in the conclaves in 1689 , 1691 , 1700 , 1721 and 1724 . He died during the vacancy of the Apostolic See in 1730.

Appreciation

Benedetto Pamphilj was an important figure in the culture and arts of Rome in the 17th and 18th centuries ( Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj ), especially as a patron of music. He was the author of numerous oratorio librettos, sonnets and secular cantata texts, some of which he set to music himself or had the young Georg Friedrich Handel set to music.

There is no evidence of a premiere for Handel's two-part oratorio Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno ( HWV 46a) from 1707, so the location of this performance at the Collegio Germanico in Rome is , as is often claimed, pure speculation. However, there is evidence of the performances of Handel's later arrangements as Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità , Oratorio in tre parti , (HWV 46b, London, March 23, 1737) and The Triumph of Time and Truth , Oratorio in three parts (English text by George Oldmixon and Thomas Morell , HWV 71, London, March 11th 1757 at the Theater Royal, Covent Garden ).
