Michael Talbot (musicologist)

Michael Owen Talbot (born January 4, 1943 in Luton ) is a British musicologist and composer .

Life

During his school days in Welwyn Garden City , Talbot received a scholarship from the Royal Academy of Music in London . From 1960 he studied piano, organ, music theory and composition at the London Royal College of Music ; In 1961 he moved to Clare College in Cambridge , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 , a Bachelor of Music in 1965 and a Master of Arts in 1969 . In 1968 he received his doctorate with a thesis on instrumental music Tomaso Albinoni for Ph.D. He then taught musicology at the University of Liverpool until 2002/2003 : 1968–69 as Assistant Lecturer , 1969–79 as Lecturer , 1979–83 as Senior Lecturer , 1983–86 as Reader and 1986–2002 / 3 as Alsop Professor .

Talbot is a member of the Royal Musical Association and the Società Italiana di Musicologia . In 1990 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy . He is married and has two children.

research

Talbot is an internationally recognized expert on Italian baroque music . His monographs on Antonio Vivaldi and Tomaso Albinoni are considered standard works; but he also devoted his attention to forgotten composers such as Benedetto Vinaccesi and Antonio Montanari . Talbot is co-editor of the journals Music and Letters and Studi Vivaldiani and has edited numerous forgotten works according to the guidelines of historical performance practice .

For his scientific merits he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( Cavaliere ) in 1980 , the CB Oldman Prize of the International Association of Music Libraries in 1989 and the Serena Medal of the British Academy in 1999.

Compositional creation

Since 2005 Talbot has also been active as a composer of historicizing works, taking up elements from the time of Buxtehude and Corelli to the time of Galuppi and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach . He is a member of the neo-baroque composers' association Vox Saeculorum .
