Tuone Udaina

Tuone Udaina ( Italian: Antonio Udina , * 1821 ; † June 10, 1898 ), also known as barbur 'hairdresser' after his profession , was the last known speaker of Dalmatian , a Romance language on the coast of Dalmatia and on the offshore islands Krk , Cres and Rab was spoken. He spoke the northern or vegliotic dialect ( Dalmatian Viklasun ), which was used on the island of Krk (Dalmatian Vikla ). He was killed by a mine in an accident while working.

Dalmatian was not Udaina's actual mother tongue. He had learned it as a child when his parents sometimes spoke it at home because they thought Tuone didn't understand Dalmatian. Before his death he told the linguist Matteo Giulio Bartoli : “ El mi tuota e la maja niena favlua cosaic, in veclisun, jali favlua ce jali kredua ce ju non kapaja, ma ju toč. ”(German:“ My father and my mother spoke like that, they spoke Viklasun because they thought I didn't understand them, but I understood everything. ”)

When Bartoli visited him in 1898, Tuone Udaina had not spoken Dalmatian for almost 20 years. At the time of Bartoli's research, Udaina was almost deaf and had no teeth. Despite this, the linguist managed to write down about 2800 Dalmatian words and a few stories, including from Udaina's own life. Bartoli's book is the main source of information on the Dalmatian language.
