Matteo Giulio Bartoli

Matteo Giulio Bartoli (born November 22, 1873 in Labin , † January 23, 1946 in Turin ) was an Italian Romance philologist , linguist and dialectologist .

life and work

Bartoli studied with Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke and Adolf Mussafia in Vienna , with Heinrich Hübschmann in Strasbourg and with Jules Gilliéron in Paris . His two-volume work on the extinct Dalmatian language of his Istrian homeland brought him a lifelong professorship in 1907 for Storia comparata delle lingue classiche e neolatine , from 1925 for Linguistica and from 1939 for Glottologia at the University of Turin . From 1926 he was co-editor of the magazine Archivo Glottologico Italiano . Bartoli was an important theorist of linguistic geography ( linguistica areal or linguistica spaziale ) and initiator of the Italian Linguistic Atlas ( Atlante Linguistico Italiano , ALI). Antonio Gramsci studied with him temporarily . Benvenuto Terracini is one of his students .

Bartoli's main finding is:

"Central areas ( aree centrali ) of Romania are more innovative than lateral areas ( aree laterali ), or innovations from the central areas reach the lateral areas late or not at all"
