Antoniotto Adorno (Doge, 1479)

Antoniotto Adorno (* 1479 in Genoa ; † September 12, 1528 in Milan ) was the 45th Doge of the Republic of Genoa . As an opponent of Giano II di Fregoso , Doge 1512-1513, he made pacts with King Ludwig XII in the Italian wars . of France and was from that 1513 to the Governor appointed (governor) of Genoa. After the defeat of the French in the Battle of Novara in the same year, Antoniotto Adorno had to retreat to Milan and lost the support of the French. In the same year Ottaviano di Campofregoso (1470-1524), a cousin of Giano II, was elected Doge of Genoa. However, in 1515 he had to recognize the dominance of France. At the same time, Antoniotto Adorno changed sides and formed an alliance with Charles I of Spain. After the defeat of the French in the Battle of Bicocca , he was elected Doge in 1522. In August 1527 French troops occupied Genoa and forced Antoniotto Adorno to flee. He died on September 12, 1528 in Milan and was buried in the church of S. Francesco presso S. Ambrogio.

Antoniotto Adorno was of patrician origin and an important feudal lord in Liguria, Piedmont and Calabria, a. a. as Conte di Rende e San Fili and as Baron von Montalto and Guardia degli Oltremontani. He was married to Anna Pico della Mirandola, daughter of the scholar Giovanni Francesco Pico della Mirandola . From this connection a daughter emerged as the only heiress: Maddalena Adorno, who married Barnaba Adorno di Carlo, a distant relative. With Antoniotto Adorno the political power of the family ended, which had played a leading role in Genoa since the middle of the 14th century and provided seven doges and a governor (for the Sforza ). Antonietto was also responsible for the permanent expulsion of the Fregoso (also: Campofregoso) from Genoa, whose family members held the Doge's office a total of 13 times. Antoniotto Adorno was the last Doge of Genoa to be elected for life. In the year of his death, a new form of government was introduced under the leadership of Andrea Doria : the aristocratic republic of Genoa.
