Life

The son of Hendrik Carolus van der Boon Mesch and his wife Elisabeth Jacoba van Braam came from a family that established itself in the scientific life of the Netherlands in the early 19th century. After attending the Latin school in his place of birth, van der Boon Mesch had received training in chemistry from a Delft pharmacist. In 1821 he began studying at the University of Leiden . After five years of training, he took part in various competitions that had chemical and literary topics as their content, and for which he won gold medals.

In 1826 he received his doctorate with the treatise de montibus igne ardenlibus Insulae Javae corumdemque lapidibú as a doctor of natural sciences, which work was also translated into German. In the same year on July 26th, he became a lecturer in natural sciences, teaching chemistry and industry in Leiden. On January 6, 1829 he was appointed associate professor of chemistry at the University of Leiden, which task he took on on May 24, 1829 with the speech de Chymiae artibus conjunctae fine et officio . On September 29, 1836 he was appointed full professor of chemistry by royal resolution. His teaching position included pharmaceutical, inorganic and organic chemistry.

After Gerard Wttewaall van Wickenburgh died, he took over the lectures on agriculture and when Kaspar Georg Karl Reinwardt retired, he took over his chemistry lectures in 1844. He also took part in the university's organizational tasks and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1847/48 . He put down this task with the speech de rebus academicis nostra praesirtiem aetate justo pretio habendis . On October 6, 1859, he participated in the inauguration of the new chemical laboratory in Leiden with a speech. On September 30, 1873 he was retired from his professorship by royal resolution, which he complied with on October 1 of that year.

He was also a member of several learned societies of his time. In 1833 he became an associate member of the Diligentiain Society in The Hague, and in 1829 a corresponding member, in 1843 a member of the first class of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sciences in Amsterdam and, after its reorganization, member in 1851 of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (Natural History Department). He also received the honors of a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , as well as the honor of a Commander and Grand Officer of the Order of the Oak Crown . His body was buried in Delft.
