The Antoniusbasilika ( Spanish Basilica San Antonio de Padua ) is a parish church in Manzanares in the east of Caldas , Colombia . It is dedicated to Anthony of Padua and has the title of a minor basilica .

history

With a population of 400 inhabitants, an independent parish was founded in Manzanares in 1866, its simple church was thatched. In 1902, the German priest Antonio María Hartman began building a brick church with a tiled roof and steeple. The church was completed by Augustinian recollects from 1916 . It had a high altar and pictures of Anthony of Padua and Francis of Assisi . On November 18, 1945, a fire destroyed the church, leaving only the stone pillars and the front standing.

Building

The present church was built in reinforced concrete and brick by the builder Pablo Díaz. Construction began in 1945 after the fire and was completed in 1967 without the previously planned central tower.

The three-aisled church has a maximum height of 42 meters, a length of 59 meters and a width of 32.5 meters and a capacity of almost 800 seats and 600 standing places. One of the two church towers next to the entrance acts as a bell tower. At the top of the entrance portal there is a large clock facing the park. A high dome was erected over the crossing with a two-meter high statue of Christ the King.

Furnishing

The wooden main altar is dedicated to the patron saint Anthony of Padua and is located in the central nave. The interior of the dome is extensively decorated, the images of the four evangelists can be seen in the upper part. The forty or so artistic stained glass windows were purchased in Cali and manufactured by Velasco.

Basilica minor

In 2013, parishioners started the project to obtain the title of a minor basilica . Pastor Yonny Quintana Niño pointed out the problematic condition of the church and the necessary renovations were started. As early as 2015, the congregation received the news that Pope Francis had given the church the rank. In 2017 the ranking was ceremonially carried out.
