Anthony's Chapel

The chapel of St. Anthony of Padua was built in 1684. It is located in the Niederernen district of the municipality of Ernen in Untergoms in the canton of Valais . The chapel is listed as a monument of the middle protection level (B object).

history

Since the church was consecrated to St. Immaculate ( Immaculate Conception ), it was decreed in the act of visitation in 1704 that the Mass of the Patronage should be moved to the Feast of the Seven Joys of Mary . The saints Antonius and Stefanus (from 1687) appear as secondary patrons . Saint Stephen was replaced by Saint Sebastian in 1704 . In 1809 the sanctuary was renamed the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. Major renovations were carried out on the building in 1780, 1830 and 1877–1880. On the occasion of the total renovation in 1931, the vault paintings were renewed by Hermann Liebich von Einsiedeln. In 1959 the interior was renovated.

building

The main axis of the chapel is in a south-easterly direction. It has a rectangular nave to which the short choir, closed on three sides and drawn in on all sides, connects. It is covered with a kinked gable roof, and an open roof turret with an eight-sided pointed helmet is placed on the end of the choir roof. The entrance portal is a round arched Giltstein portal, above which a depiction of St. Anthony of Padua painted on sheet metal is attached. This representation was created by Hermann Liebich in 1931.

inner space

The choir is raised by four steps, which protrude into the nave and the lowest step also carries the two side altars in the nave. A frieze-free profile ledge surrounds both rooms, with the one in the choir being set higher. On the back wall of the ship there is a whitewashed beam instead of the ledge. The rooms are spanned by a plastered ceiling. This is designed in the ship as a shield arch barrel, which is structured with five pair-shaped shield arches. In the choir it is a five-part cap vault with a central medallion.

The interior painting was renewed in 1931 by Hermann Liebich from Einsiedeln, the original painter is unknown. Louis XVI style and the rococo-like softness suggests that they were created in the last quarter of the 18th century, they could have been created on the occasion of the renovation in 1780 or somewhat late in style in 1830. The scenes are only shown in the nave, while only the ornaments were used in the choir. The scenes are based on the Antonius cycle of the St. Antonius Chapel in Münster , but they contain two additional scenes and are depicted in a different order or reversed.

The high altar is dated to 1684 and is attributed to the masters Johann Sigristen from Glis and Moritz Bodmer from Mühlebach. There were two putti on the entablature, which must have been added later, as they are attributed to Anton Sigristen († 1745). One of them was stolen in 1974. The altar has a three-axis main floor with a single-axis upper zone. In the main niche there is Mary of Victory, in the left Saint Anthony of Padua, in the right Saint Sebastian, in the openwork upper zone the group of Holy Walk.

The left side altar shows a painting of St. Ignatus with two flanks, the right Joseph or Jesus, the left shows a female saint (Maria?). The characteristic flank statue of an unknown master was stolen in 1974. The right side altar shows a painting of St. Michael with two flank dams. The right shows St. Francis, the left John the Baptist .

The portal door was replaced by a copy in 1937, made by Emanuel and Ludwig Carlen from Reckingen. The original door from 1684 has been in the Erner Zendenrat house since 1953 as the door to the meeting room.
