Apache Impala is an open source project of the Apache Software Foundation , which is used for fast SQL queries in Apache Hadoop .

Impala was originally developed by Cloudera , announced in 2012 and introduced in 2013. It is now also being funded by MapR , Oracle and Amazon . The inspiration for Impala was Google F1. Impala has been listed as an incubator project since October 2016 and as a top-level project of the Apache Software Foundation since December 2017 .

Impala is a query tool for data from the Hadoop file system, HBase and Amazon S3 without the need to move or transform data. Files in the format of Apache Avro , Apache Parquet or LZO are also supported. Impala was written in C ++ , is parallelized and scalable. Code is generated on the fly using an LLVM . Many tools in the Hadoop environment are intended for use cases with batch queries of large amounts of data. Impala masters queries with short waiting times. It is integrated into the Hadoop software landscape because, among other things, the same resource manager and metadata are used.
