Apex is a small town in Wake County , North Carolina near the city of Raleigh . In 2015, it was voted the place with the highest quality of life in the United States.
history
In the pre-colonial period, the area of the city was inhabited by the Tuscarora tribe. In the late 19th century, a small community developed around the station. The forests were cleared for arable land, a large part of which was used for growing tobacco. Since Apex was near the state capital, it became a trading center. The railroad shipped products such as wood, tar, and tobacco. The city was officially founded in 1873. In 1900 the city had 349 inhabitants. In 2018 the population was estimated at 53,852.
Demographics
At the time of the 2010 census, 37,476 people lived in 13,225 households and 9,959 families in the city. The population density was 2,437.9 people per square mile. There were 13,922 housing units at an average density of 905.8 units per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 80% white, 8% African-American, 7% Asian, 3% other races, and 3% two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 7% of the population.
The poverty rate was 5% in 2017, which is below average. House prices and median incomes were above the national average.
economy
A phase of the population boom has mainly occurred since the late 1990s. Research Triangle Park, founded in the 1960s, created a strong demand for technology workers, with Apex benefiting from its proximity to Raleigh. In addition to research and development, the cultivation and processing of tobacco also play an important role.
