Aphandra natalia is a species of palm native to South America. It is the only species in the genus Aphandra . The endosperm of the seeds is provided by vegetable ivory .

features

Aphandra natalia is an upright, short-stemmed, solitary, unreinforced palm. It is dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ) and flourishes several times. The petiole is short, the leaves are pinnate.

Aphandra differs from the closely related genera of the Phytelepheae by the following combination of features: The male flowers have elongated anthers on long stamens that sit on a non-polyhedral receptacle . The leaf sheaths produce abundant piassava fibers that droop and obscure the upper part of the stem. The male flowers are in groups of four or five, with the flower axes forming a funnel-shaped pseudo-stem.

A male flower forms 400 to 650 stamens.

The chromosome number is 2n = 36.

Distribution and locations

The genus is native to the west of the Amazon basin and occurs in Ecuador , Peru and Brazil . It grows in the lowland and foothills of the rainforest up to a height of 800 m. Occasionally it is also cultivated at higher altitudes.

Systematics

The genus Aphandra is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Ceroxyloideae , tribe Phytelepheae . The genus is monotypical, it consists of the only species Aphandra natalia . Her sister group is Ammandra .

The name Aphandra was composed of the names of the two related genera: Ammandra , the ph comes from Phytelephas . The genus was in 1991 first described the type -Art aphandra previously as Ammandra narrow out.
