Female of the panda dwarf cichlid

The panda dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma nijsseni ) is a species from the cichlid family . Aquarists count this species, in which both sexes have different and very conspicuous body colors, to the most beautiful South American dwarf cichlids.

Appearance

The males of the panda dwarf cichlid grow up to 8 centimeters long. They have a yellow chest and stomach region. The round caudal fin has a semicircular, fiery red edge, while the pelvic fins are bright yellow. The upper side of the body of the male panda dwarf cichlid is light blue to gentian blue in color.

The females differed very clearly from this appearance. They only reach a body length of about 5 centimeters. Your body color is a bright yellow. There are large black spots on it.

Distribution area and habitat

As is typical for other Apistogramma species, the range of the panda dwarf cichlid is very small. So far it has only been found at a border station between Peru and Brazil on a road near the Río Ucayali .

At the only place where they have been found so far, the fish live in a watercourse up to eighty centimeters deep. A layer of leaves that had fallen into the water covered the bottom of the water. Underwater plants, however, were missing. The water was very soft and acidic and had a temperature of 27.5 ° C.

Reproduction

Panda dwarf cichlids are hiding breeders that prefer to lay their spawn on the ceiling of a cave. The female takes care of the brood. The male defends the territory.

The juveniles are quite fast-growing. The rearing temperature in the aquarium should not be too high, otherwise you will get a very high proportion of males.

Aquaristics

The fish were imported to Europe for the first time in the late 1970s and were immediately bred successfully. However, these tribes were extinct again in the early 1980s. A second import took place in the 1990s and the fish were successfully bred again and are commercially available.
