features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moths of a first generation is 20 to 29 millimeters, those of the much smaller second generation only 15 to 18 millimeters. The front wings are colored ocher or yellow-gray and have a more or less reddish dust. The transverse lines are sometimes laid out as thin red bands, but can also be very indistinct. The hind wings are similar in color and pattern to the forewings. The antennae of the males are ciliated very briefly.

Caterpillar, pupa

The caterpillars are short and stocky, tapered towards the front, have velvety hairs and a greenish color. They have a dark, interrupted back line, a wavy yellowish side line and small dark point warts.

The characteristic feature of the pupa is the strong green color, which is interrupted by brownish wing sheaths and small black warts.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution of the species extends through large parts of Europe (with the exception of Fennoscandinavia ) and further east to Turkey , the Levant , Iran , Iraq as well as to Armenia and the Caucasus . In the Southern Alps it rises to around 1000 meters, in the Spanish mountains up to 2200 meters. The common cone sprout lives mainly dry and warm areas in which the food plants of the caterpillars occur, including dry grasslands and steppe heaths.

Way of life

The diurnal and nocturnal moths appear in two generations, whose main flight times are in the months of June and July or August and September. However, the second generation is only formed in climatically favorable areas. Both sexes approach artificial light sources in roughly the same proportion to each other. The caterpillars feed on different species of Restharrow ( Ononis ). The scientific name of the species from the Latin language is derived from this.

Danger

The restocking spanner occurs in most of the German federal states, but is rare in some areas and is listed in category 3 (endangered) on the red list .
