Aplocheilus is a genus of small freshwater fish found in India and large parts of Southeast Asia, in pools, ditches, and on flooded rice fields. The scientific name of the genus refers to the non-protractile (non-protruding) mouth of the fish ( Gr .: "haploos" = simple, "cheilos" = lip). In German, the fish are referred to as pike- fish, a name that is also used for members of the genera Epiplatys and Pachypanchax as well as for the family Galaxiidae .
features
Aplocheilus species are pike-shaped, stretched surface fish with an overhead, wide mouth and large eyes. They become 5 cm to 10 cm long. The front part of the body is almost round in cross section and flattens out towards the rear. The lower jaw of the upper mouth protrudes over the upper jaw. All Aplocheilus species have a silvery vertex on their head. The shorter dorsal fin has fewer fin rays than the long anal fin , which is often elongated like a pennant, and begins around the middle.
- Fin formula : dorsal 6–9, anal 13–17.
- Scale formula : mLR 29–35.
Way of life
Aplocheilus species move little, but lurk for prey, mostly under floating plants. They feed mainly on approach food (insects that have fallen on the surface of the water). The fish are oviparous and spawn in fine-feathered plants.
Systematics
The genus Aplocheilus is very closely related to the genus Pachypanchax of Madagascar and the Seychelles , and with this genus forms the family Aplocheilidae within the order of the tooth parsley (Cyprinodontiformes).
