Rekha comes from the middle class and lives with her widowed mother. When Rekha was five years old, Nalini, a friend of her mother's, died. Therefore, Nalini's daughter Lata and her maid Rampyari are accepted into Rekha's family. Rekha is also friends with Shankar and is saddened when he and his family move to Kanpur .

Years later, Rekha became a young woman. Shankar returns as a qualified doctor and asks for Rekha's hand. Before the engagement takes place, Rampyari finds out that Shankar is having an affair with Lata. So it comes to the marriage between Shankar and Lata.

Added to this is the death of Rekha's mother, who leaves her with a mountain of debts. Rekha pays the debt and now lives with her servant Fohkat, his son Makhan and his wife Misri.

Rekha also finds work, but she gets sick. Which is why Shanker asks her to live with his family. But Rekha refuses his offer. Only when Lata asks her to change her mind and move into Shankar's house with Fohkat - not knowing that there will be a murder in this house.

Lata is murdered and Rekha is accused of being the murderer: At the trial everything speaks against Rekha, but shortly afterwards it turns out that Lata's maid Rampyari is behind it all and so Rekha and Shankar leave the courtroom.
