The Apostolic Vicariate of Guajira was established on January 17, 1905 by Pope Pius X from cessions of territory from the diocese of Santa Marta .
On December 4, 1952, the Apostolic Vicariate Guajira was by Pope Pius XII. dissolved. The Apostolic Vicariates of Riohacha and Valledupar were established from the territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Guajira .
In 1950 there were 114,782 Catholics in the area of the Apostolic Vicariate Guajira. The Vicariate Apostolic was divided into twelve parishes and had 19 priests .
