Diameter line
The Appenzell – St. Gallen – Trogen was a key project of the Appenzeller Bahnen to connect the St. Gallen – Trogen and St. Gallen – Gais – Appenzell lines at the St. Gallen train station by 2018 . The most important and largest sub-project was the construction of the 725-meter-long Ruckhalde tunnel to remove the rack section between St. Gallen and Riethüsli . The diameter line enables the 15-minute cycle between St. Gallen and Teufen and improves connections to the intercity trains to and from Zurich . The world record curve in the Ruckhalde fell victim to the new building, where the world's narrowest gear curve had passed with a radius of only 30 meters and a gradient of 90 per thousand.
Rolling stock
The rolling stock is divided into
- the rolling stock of the meter gauge network , some with a gear
- the only railcar for the Rheineck – Walzenhausen route with a gauge of 1200 mm
- the standard-gauge rolling stock, partly with cogwheel, for the Rorschach – Heiden route
