April is a female given name . It is mainly found in the Anglo-Saxon-speaking area , where it is said to have been used as a nickname in England from the 13th and 14th centuries . However, as a first name April has only been in use since the 1940s and reached its peak in the United States in the 1970s. Since the early 2000s, the Hispanic variant Abril has spread widely and has now almost reached the level of April when it comes to choosing a name for newborns.
