Aquanox (from Latin: aqua = water and nox = night) is a 3D underwater combat simulation from the German developer studio Massive Development from 2001 for Windows . It is the successor to Schleichfahrt and was distributed by the Ravensburger label Fishtank Interactive.

action

As in its predecessor, the setting is the ocean in the year 2666, into the depths of which mankind retreated after the radioactive contamination of the surface and founded new underwater realms. People's new world is commonly simply called aqua. The player takes on the role of the mercenary Emerald "Dead Eye" Flint, who is hired as a mercenary again after his victory against the Bionts. However, when his submarine “Succubus” is stolen after a night of sleep, he has to work his way up again by accepting smaller orders from the bottom up, fighting both pirates and bionts. In the underwater city of Neopolis, the military and putschists are fighting for supremacy. The putschists succeed in taking control of an old satellite, which is used to bombard the plates of the earth, causing seaquakes and volcanic eruptions. However, it also frees an ancient race of giant sea creatures that is now threatening the entire Atlantic alliance. Flint must do everything possible to stop this new threat.

Gameplay

Aquanox is an underwater simulation that focuses on fighting against enemy submarines. The game is divided into different missions that the player receives in the form of orders. By completing these missions, Flint earns credits that can be used to purchase upgraded submarine types or equipment. While the predecessor crawl speed required a more tactical approach from the player during the fights, Aquanox was staged with significantly more action, especially during the fights, and the complexity of the controls was greatly reduced and simplified. Instead of the joystick, the game can also be controlled with the mouse. Aquanox is based on the gameplay of action-packed space flight simulations and first-person shooters .

development

Although a sequel was already hinted at in the credits of Schleichfahrt and there were previous reports, Aquanox was officially announced in November 2000 by Ravensburger Interactive (later under the label Fishtank Interactive ). It was developed with the help of the KRASS engine programmed by Massive itself and was one of the first games with the support of Nvidia's Grafiktechnik Transform and Lighting (T&L). The game therefore also served the graphics chip manufacturer as a reference game for the new technical possibilities of the upcoming Geforce 3 series . In cooperation with the graphics card manufacturer ELSA , which developed one of the first Geforce 3 sales models with the Gladiac 920 as an official Nvidia partner, Massive presented the game in August 2001 at the ECTS trade fair. To promote the game, Massive published a small, Moorhuhn- style flash game on the official website in September 2001 . On October 4, 2001, the completion of the development was announced, on October 11, Aquanox came into the German-speaking trade.

reception

The game received very good ratings in Germany. The GameStar rated the game with "brilliant graphics, great missions, insane bitch". Thanks to the latest graphics technology, the game world is fascinating and the mission design ensures playful variety. On the other hand, the opponents' artificial intelligence , the lack of mouse support for menu control and the poorly thought-out multiplayer mode were criticized . In their test, PC Games criticized many program errors and described the menu and joystick controls as "simply unfinished". Nevertheless, both came to a positive rating and awarded 85% each. Foreign media judged the game more critically. Gamespot awarded only 6.1 out of 10 points, IGN 7 out of 10, JeuxVideo 15 out of 20. The aggregator Metacritic determined a Metascore of 63/100 for the game.

In Germany, the game reached number 1 on the Media Control sales charts after the first week of sales. In 2002 Massive released a follow-up called Aquanox 2: Revelation .
